originality

encounter the comfortable,
count the cost

of maintaining identity among
clones cloaked in one entity

walk with rarity while they
walk plentifully, plainly

painstakingly impossible
to tell apart

weigh worth
in walking a different direction

no present

looks back and sees

seas breeze waves’ blows battle the boat
pirates treasure sharks
fascination afloat
ships ahoy

a boy

memories of imagination
lost, left, submerged and capsized

a man emerged
grown from foolish games
maturity made forgotten dreams

future focused
daunting, impossible, insurmountable
pressed for ultimate success

present passed

a direct path from
future to past

THABEET

After watching Thabeet for three years (including this past season at every game) I know he deserves to be a top 5 draft pick. The improvement he showed from his sophomore to junior year was amazing. After playing basketball for only a few years, Thabeet was the NCAA defensive player of the year two years in a row. Aside from his daunting height and blocked shots, Thabeet's offensive game has improved drastically. In warm-ups this year I saw him shoot consistent 15 footers. Its only a matter of time until that becomes a part of his game. In the paint he is a little soft, but the intensity he needs is only going to come with experience with the big boys.

I saw Thabeet during Spring Weekend at UConn about three weeks ago. I shook his hand and said Good luck next year, Thabeet. He responded Thanks, in the deepest voice I've ever heard.

Anyway, heres a video (Pre-draft workout tour: Hasheem Thabeet) of Thabeet working out recently, getting ready for the NBA. Watching all 7'3" of him run up that sand dune kills me.

millionth english word

I just read an article that they're adding the one millionth word to the english dictionary. Finally! what have they been waiting for? The problem is the words they are considering adding. "defriend" and "noob" are two in the running to the be the one millionth word.

are you serious?

how could they (whoever decides this) ever consider adding such ridiculous (dare i say) words. they must themselves be noobs. will noob be spelt with two zeros instead of o's? and dont even get me started on "defriend." come on. are you serious? "defriend"? can you picture it?

de-friend (verb) - to oust one of your friends on facebook

n00b (noun) - a derogetory term describing a person who is new to and/or is terrible at something

coke

these special edition coke cans for summer 2009 are mint. coke's logo always appeals to me. from the classic glass bottles to the red can, there is something about a coke that makes you want to drink it. the christmas bottles and cans are always something i look forward to as well. though, coke commercials are consistently somewhat weak.

at a young age i became addicted to coke. i have since broken the habitual three cans a day, but still enjoy an ice cold coke once in a while. the best part about my house in the winter time is the ice cold cans in the garage. the best ones are a little slushy.

crayons.

these crayon sculptures are a mint idea. taking an art instrument and creating art with it in a completely different way. i might try to make some. its probably harder than it looks though.

"Is that Donovan McNabb?"

check out this video. i dont know what this guy was thinking. it was clearly not donovan mcnabb and if the guy was trying to make a joke, it was in poor taste. the other anchors' reactions kill me. "Dude." "Whats wrong with you."

finals

this week i have finals. as usual, around this time i procrastinate and have trouble focusing on studying. in my procrastination, i wonder who came up with the idea of cramming an exam for each course into one week. this doesnt promote learning at all, but instead forces students to memorize as much as possible in a few days time. doing so almost guarantees that students will forget the information following the exam. thus, the idea of final exams is nonsensical.

an alternative testing technique may advocate learning and understanding rather than cramming and forgetting. the only thing i can think of is perhaps spacing out exams. while this solution wouldnt be feasible at large universities, smaller colleges could make use of it. students would take only one or two exams per week in the final two to three weeks of each semester.

i'm off to go memorize some material that i'll soon forget...hopefully not before my exams.
