Day One in Key West

This was the scene at the car rental desk after we landed in Fort Lauderdale. We'd already been awake for 6 hours at this point (4:30 am wake up call). After we got in the car we stayed in the parking garage for about 15 minutes until my mom finally decided that the AC did in fact work properly. Though an unnecessary step, we were happy it worked for our 3 hour drive.
On the way through the keys we stopped at an idyllic oceanside restaurant where this rastafarian entertained us with reggae (including a Michael Jackson tribute).
This bridge filled a 7 mile gap between two keys. According to my dad, the Gulf of Mexico is on the right and the Atlantic on the left.

We drove on the same road for a couple hundred miles. These Floridians didnt exceed 45 mph the entire way and all of us were getting a little aggravated.

After napping at the hotel for a while we picked up our cousins from Chicago at their hotel. We headed to the Shrimp Shack which is a pretty accurate description. The shrimp come right off that boat everyday, which was converted into a stage for the night.
Shrimp was served like this. Eyes and legs still attached and no plate.
Then we caught a glimpse of the sunset.

Great Runner's World article about Darren Brown, who with his late father became the first American father-son sub 4 minute mile duo.

Ridiculous

Dante Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter yesterday. Though he faced up to 15 years in prison, he was punished with only 30 days and an additional two years on house arrest. I dont know how long criminals with the same charges face on average, but this seems low.

I dont understand how cases like this can slip through the court so easily. Pro athletes and celebrities dont deserve any breaks from the law. They should be tried on the same level as every other citizen, especially because they are in the spotlight. Punishing them so minimally in cases that are seen nationally lowers the moral compass of those who see the results, namely children who admire them.

Accidents Happen

I'm not sure how the movie will be but this trailer is crazy.

Domination

Galen Rupp started the year with an individual and team cross country championship. Then he won the 3k, 5k, and anchored the winning DMR indoors to lead Oregon to another national championship. Last night he won the 10k at NCAA Outdoor Nationals and topped it off tonight winning the 5k. Supposedly he stopped to put his shoe back on after it fell off.

He stopped and still won a national championship. That is called domination.

Oregon is also currently first in the team standings.

He's been mentored/coached by Alberto Salazar since his freshman year in high school and its really shown this year. I'm excited to see what he can do against the world as a pro.

Shutter Island

This new Leonardo DiCaprio movie looks like it could be good.

Best Miler in the World

Asbel Kiprop(left) just won the Bowerman Mile at the Pre Classic this past Sunday with a 3:48 (http://www.runnerspace.com/video.php?do=view&video_id=13535).

This wasn't any 3:48 for a couple reasons. First, this kid is supposedly 19 years old, though he could be 21 or 22. Secondly, he began his celebration coming off the final turn while he was still in second place. He blessed himself before he even passed the world leader in Haron Keitany and continued to do so throughout the final 100 meters. He finished with some self-righteous clapping, a kiss to the crowd at Hayward Field, and the finger wag that he coined during the Olympics. It is hard to believe what he could've run had he finished with everything he had.
Finally, this was his first mile. Ever.

It is also hard to say that this kid won't steal Hicham el Guerrouj's world record mile, 3:43.13. Surely no one can compete with this kid right now. And when you compare the American sensations his age (Derrick, Puskedra, German Fernandez), they look like chumps. When you compare him to every other American, they look like chumps as well.

He's already won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics which should soon be turned gold. Had it not been for Rashid Ramzi, the blood doping winner, Kiprop would have obliterated the competition. This kid is the best and the favorite to win gold at the World Champs.

UP

I recently went to see UP which was great. I was surprised at the meaning they packed into a film targeted at children. It is hard to believe that a cartoon can provide both humor for children and serious emotion driven plot for adults. It focuses heavily on loss and never giving up but manages lightheartedness at the same time.

Here is a blog by one of the film's artists http://louromano.blogspot.com/2009/05/art-of-up_3697.html
